I went to seattle to protest the wto, i met jose bove there. i drove for 24 hours to get there and lived in my friend's car. the morning of the first protest we didn't know what to expect. i had never been teargassed before. when i got there and i saw everyone with rags over their faces i had to stop and re think what i was doing. i looked in my bag. there wasn't anything i could use.
i had a little handkercheif which i held over my face. i didn't leave because i didn't want to give up. i was there to fight what made me angry. i was scared and i shook when the police started to beat us. i realized i had never fought for something like this. i had packed an orange in my bagand when we got teargassed, i held the rinds over my nose and mouth. it helped. tear gas is incredible, the way in which it invades every orifice in burning pain. I got separated from my friend. some people started running and i ran to try and find him. a man was laying on the sidewalk shaking. the tear gas had hurt him badly. i was scared because i had to find my friend but as i ran by i slipped a piece of orange into his mouth. he looked up but he couldn't say anything. you might think i was crazy to leave him there but there were people laying everywhere on the ground crying and there were people who were medics that were putting people on carts and pushing them away. I had to find my friend. i was alone in a big city. marshall law. i was afraid i would havve to sleep on the street alone that night. now when i smell oranges i think of this. |

One day I was near the Confucian temple at Yuanshan and they were preparing for the Teacher's Day ceremony. I went to the office to get a ticket and the next day I went to the ceremony --- it was really interesting and inspiring to see the temple being used by Taipei people in their everyday lives. Its a living tradition. |
