Mary B Georgekish: Wemindji246 photos

Mary B Georgekish was born in the bush in Wemindji territory in the 1940's. She learned many skills living on the land with her mother, sister and other family members. She attended residential school in the 1950's. In 1960 she bought her first camera and started taking many pictures. When she began teaching Cree Culture classes at the Maquatua Eeyou School in Wemindji during the 1990's, these photos, many of which documented family members practicing Cree traditional skills and knowledge, became useful teaching aids. This collection of 250 photos is organized according to the skills and activities they represent such as the spring goose hunt, preparing traditional food or getting a fishnet ready to use. There is also a large group of wedding pictures taken over the years from 1960 to the 1990's. When Mary heard about George Legrady's photo project on Wemindji radio, she phoned the station and generously offered to share some of her own images. She met with George and then worked with Katherine Scott to describe each photo in detail. The stories provide a rich history of life in Wemindji since the 1960's.

    Title: Spring goose hunt
Description: Philip Visitor coming home from hunting. And this is what he's going to have for supper [in the lower right hand corner there's a roasting goose that's almost ready to eat]. He's bringing some geese. They are tied together with string. If he killed more there could be as many as five tied together in front and back or could be 4 tied together. That's a big weight to carry back to camp. Then the man puts the geese down. You know those geese are tied together with their small feathers on the wings - look carefully here. When they killed them, they tie them together. When they bring them home the women untie those feathers.

You know one time I was working on plucking the geese and then they brought in 70 geese and I cleaned them all because we had to get the guts out. You cut it in the middle at the bottom and you have to try and get it out without breaking the bladder (esophagus). If you break it, all the meat will have a bitter taste.

Later, when you want to use the dried goose you boil it and then you could cook it over the open fire and it tastes good. We used to do that a long time ago. This is in the cabin where we lived at goose camp with other people.

    Title: Storing dried goose meat
Description: More goose skin drying. This isn't done very often any more because there not enough geese now. The dark ones in in back are much drier, they have been hanging there longer. A long time ago, after they were dry and you took the,m down you would take them out on a long stick to dry more in the air outside. When they are almost all the way dry but still a little bit moist, you fold them. They were stored in a box, those wooden boxes we had a long time ago. Thats where they were kept. Sometimes they were kept in a cloth bag.

Another thing we used to do a long time ago, we used to throw the wing feathers away in one place. Now they put them in the garbage and they burn them. Its part of respecting. Thats Emily.

[The moss is reindeer moss, Cladonia sp, that grows everywhere in Wemindji territory under conifer trees]. The moss sticks well to the poles because it is hooked onto the bark. There is an opening at the dop so it is not too dark inside during the day. It is nice and warm inside. At bedtime you close the opening to stay warm. That opening can be closed at night and opened in the morning. There was a small stove inside.

    Story: Walking Out Ceremony
    Names: Melvin Kakabat
    Title: Walking Out
Description: This is Melvin Kakabat's walking out. It must be 1977 at spring camp. Walking out ceremonies are usually done in the spring. Not so much in the summer. And the first snowshoe walk (a similar ceremony), that's done in the late fall when you move to your winter camp, before real winter comes. That's when it was done. Emily says that long time ago they didn't make the same kind of snowsheis for the child. The were more roughly made, not like the perfect ones that adults need.
